Well, since we're so into the "free market" in the US the only way to get
any kind of reform is to offer an alternative source, which is exactly what the public option part of the plan aims to do. There is, once again, nothing in the proposals on the Hill right now that mandates participation in the government programs. That's another of the distortions that have been pushed by same people who say they believe in the free market, but can't stand any kind of outside competition. The medical industry cabal have been dodging regulation and paying millions to lobbyists for years to make sure that no reform can possibly happen under current laws. The government cannot "clean up" premiums because of our laws establishing corporate "personhood." The insurance companies have to be forced into reform though competition, and the only fair competition at this point is going to be the federal government. States, or even groups of states, don't carry enough weight.
