Secondly, what exactly warranted the response by Gates? The cops came to his house, LIKE THEY WERE ORDERED TO DO, and told him about the reported break-in. If Gates would have respectfully shown the cops ID, told him he was the owner, and explained why someone might have reported a possible break-in(I dropped my keys, and had to fool around with the lock a bit)....none of this would have happened. But he didn't.

You're making a pretty big assumption that the cops showed up and said 'hey, how's it going? Can we just look at your ID real quick?'. It's not at all improbable that the conversation went more along the lines of accusations and hostility, it's at least as probable as the conclusion you've come to.
BTW, Gates has said that he's happy someone called the police when they thought there might have been a break-in taking place.
