The Thermacell has a butane heater in it. You slide a pad that has a repellent on it over the heater. When the pad is heated, it releases the repellent. It works over an area of about 15' x 15'. Even when it is windy, the mosquitoes just stay away. There is very little smell, pretty much unnoticeable. It was great for Bear hunting. The mosquitoes were thick, but turn on the Thermacell, and they just disappear in a few minutes.
I know Bass Pro and Walmart carry the portable Themacells.
