My brother in laws Sony LCD looks really good. No problems. He scored a 40 inch 1080p XBR for around $1600 I think.
I have a love hate relationship with my 720p Panasonic Plasma. I'd buy another plasma but I couldn't recommend one to someone I don't know.

Costco is a nice place to buy for their warranty and return policy/ price matching.
I've heard Walmart is really good for warranty too. They have some great deals on right now.
You can get a really good TV for around $1000. I don't even think you need to spend that much though.
Prices have really come down recently on slightly older sets and last years models.
