The idea that you can never understand how someone else thinks or feels unless you have experienced their particular circumstances is interesting only as an example of a massively popular delusion. It has managed to do equal harm to social progress as the popular delusion it replaced - that old white men knew everything and understood everybody no matter what their particular circumstances.
It would be interesting to live in a world where arguments and people are judged on their good sense alone, and not their socioeconomic background or ethnic credentials. Unfortunately the trend seems to be in the opposite direction.
