One thing is for sure, yes MJ sold a lot of albums, but he didn't have lasting power, he was a 28x platinum album for Thriller. by the time his last album came out which was invincible nobody gave a crap about his freakshow.
At least with the Beatles, later Paul McCartney, Johnny Cash and others they managed to hold onto their fan base.
If Jackson had quit after Thriller I would agree with some of what you saying, but he ruined his own legacy and his final album was quite frankly about as good as an album that featured me making fart sounds with my arm pit.
Was he an icon and a force in the 70's and 80's? Sure, after that he was average at best.
Besides there is no comparison between the beatles and Michael Jackson.
The Beatles sold about 700 million albums to MJ's 200 million
The Beatles had 8 albums that sold 20 million plus records to MJ's 5
The Beatles sold three times more records in America then MJ (156 million to about 54 million)
The Beatles had 20 #1 singles to Jackson's 13
The Beatles had 19 U.S. number 1 Albums to MJ's 4
The Beatles spent a total of 128 weeks at the number 1 position on the US Album charts to Jackson's 19
The Beatles achieved their numbers based on an 8 year career compared to Jackson's 20 year career.
There is no comparison between the Beatles and Michael Jackson. The only thing that Jackson wins at is dancing.
