I think he was a video star - not a musical genius. I would say he only made two great albums as a solo artist - Off The Wall and Thriller. Not exactly a big catalogue. Also, much of his music was composed with collaborators. All his records after Thriller were relative flops.

he wrote a lot of his songs though. You might have a point with instruments, but he wrote a lot. He paid out of his own pocket to make a lot of Thriller.
He was a pioneer like Nirvana.
That's my point. He invented the military dance or was the first to do it. His sister asked him and used it first (Janet Jackson).
