shockingly I agree with Rouge on both points. Guns in the home don't necessarily make a great community deterrent, chances are it just brings the chances up that a criminal is going to bring a weapon of his own during a break in. There's also a chance of an untrained person with a gun hurting himself or unintentionally hurting a family member during a chaotic situation or worse yet putting a gun in the hands of a criminal. Don't misunderstand this as support for gun control or for the gun registry in its current form. If your going to have a gun in your house you have to lock it away, keep it unloaded and put a trigger lock on it, which means in terms of home defense its almost useless.

On the second part, you are allowed to use reasonable force to protect your home, yourself or your family member, but there has to be a strong line between reasonable or excessive force.

If I shoot a guy in the leg during a break in thats ok, but if I walk up to him, reload and then give him 4 in the skull, then I've become a cold blooded murderer. Its just like the fool that chased down the people that broke into his farm and shot one of them off of his property. He was no longer in a position of defending himself, he was acting like a vigilante and he used excessive force stupidly. People need to understand that your best defense is getting your family out of the house and contacting the police. You can always replace possessions, but you can't replace family members.

So in short form, the best way to secure your house is a good security system, and motion sensitve cameras in key rooms.
