I'm with everyone here who says to inform the police. They'll get some passby's late at night if they hear enough about the area. Next time if the guy did come back, rather than using first instinct and running out and trying to put him in a sling, just call the police (or tell your wife to do it) and then run out and slug the guy. At least they'll be on the way and perhaps he can get caught.

I agree though, having someone on your space is probably trippy as hell. One of the worst feelings is having your stuff taken without authorization. The good thing is, the guy probably won't return to your place knowning he was almost caught once. Just warn your neighbors and let them pass around the word because there may be a chance somebody around you may be broken into instead.
