Most of you guys sounds like rookies at this!
The trick for picking up in public is INVESTMENT. Don't think of the pickup as a single day event, it is a long term deal. This is how it works at the office, office tower, C-Train etc. Once you recognize that the girl you are into is in your office or takes your bus, you simply start with a hello, and don't press it. After a couple of hellos, you simply ask what they are all about (do they work here, etc). You have basically broken the ice simply by being polite. You then are not strangers, so that when you finally get the chance to chat it is much easier to gauge their attraction or interest.
Once this is mastered, picking up in assorted locations is easy.
This method certainly does not work on a single encounter, but if you practice what I preach, you should be well enough trained to advance to the next level.
