Here's 2 bonehead trades by Fletcher in 1988 that almost derailed the '89 Cup run:
06-Mar-88
To The Calgary Flames - Craig Coxe
To The Vancouver Canucks - Brian Bradley, Peter Bakovic and Kevan Guy
06-Sep-88
To The Calgary Flames - 1989 3rd Round selection (Veli-Pekka Kautonen)
To The Vancouver Canucks - Paul Reinhart and Steve Bozek
Bradley and Reinhart starred for the Canucks in the opening round of the '89 playoffs, and the Flames were very lucky to get out of the first round. The Flames got essentially nothing in return.
Bradley was a promising prospect who later turned into a pretty solid NHL regular, but the roster was pretty deep and he probably wouldn't have cracked the Flames' line-up. However, Reinhart was pretty close to being the Flames' best player (when not injured). But look at the dogs Fletcher got in return. Reinhart always showed up for the playoffs, and as an elite player, Fletcher should have got more for him than he did - certainly worth more than a third round pick. I always thought that the Flames could have parked Reinhart on the injured list for most of the season and revived him for the playoffs. He sure would have come in handy when Suter went down.
