It sometimes works. I've sold things privately and given small discounts for cash upfront (saves hassle, problems with cheques bouncing, EMT payments, paypal problems, etc.)
Maybe if they are fenced goods the guy will let em for for cheap and for cash quick. Doesn't hurt to ask.
