From what I can remember (from back in my BB days), it helps with performance. As you use the phone throughout the day, memory gets fragmented and bogged down etc. The battery pull is the BB way of rebooting the phone.
Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del on the keyboard did the same thing. It did for my Curve, anyway.
