When I had a condo downtown I personally found the bottle-pickers to be quite handy. I threw my garbage in the bin, left my bottles out beside the bin, and they were usually gone within 15-20 minutes. I don't really need the $0.05/bottle and I didn't have space to store a bunch of empties in my condo anyways.
I think homeless people are around in all communities (via Transit) and they usually go through the alleys. The blue bins have just made things a little easier in terms of bottle collection for them... not a big deal in my eyes.
I would be upset about the garage door testing, and trespassing into people's backyards. At least you yelled at them and they moved on. Still is frustrating because there's really nothing you can do about it.
