Things like this are so hard to debate because every individuals tastes are so inherintly different. I love 2001 because of its grandeur and the scope of what Kubrick did. It wasn't so much a movie about space as it was a movie about humankind. I love it and never tire of watching it, it is truly a beautiful movie. Other movies of Kubrick's are very similar. Take Full Metal Jacket for instance. Its about Vietnam, but he doesn't just thrust us into the middle of a battle in the jungle, he starts us out in basic training and establishes the characters before they ever go to war. The reason I love movies like these is probably why I hate movies like Spider-Man 2 so much. Don't give me a bunch of special effects with a paper-thin plot behind it and expect me to think its a good movie. Tell a great story and add in the effects later.
