Just going off memory from an interview I heard, I think it was a case of McCartney wanting to do the right thing in his mind when he heard the catalogue was available. He contacted Yoko right off the bat so he could own it in part with Yoko and John's kids. Yoko stalled and was uncooperative, Jackson swooped in and beat McCartney to the punch.
Anyways, Jackson was one of the most bizarre people on the face of the planet. Even though I knew how grotesque his appearance became I was always startled whenever I saw a photo of the guy. Absolutely insane what he did to himself. People call Marilyn Manson a freak, nope, that image is contrived and crafted.
