Michael Jackson's entire schick was a pale pastiche of innovators like James Brown, Little Richard and Stevie Wonder. Whereas these innovators sought to document the American Black Experience, Jackson instead became (with cunning ruthlessness) the Anti-Black. Gender-neutral too. Pandering to every demographic certainly has its advantages, but as an artistic statement it is suspect.
