While it may be that Jon, now 32, has hit an early mid-life crisis, or has simply become tired of his wife's nagging, one psychiatrist believes that the couple would have remained married, or at least not split up so quickly, had they not been on the show for two reasons.

"One is that I think Kate's criticism or put-downs, Kate's controlling and demeaning attitude toward Jon, became heightened because she was on television. She was playing to the camera. She wanted to show everyone that she was the poor wife who had to suffer with Jon," Dr. Carole Lieberman told CTV.ca in a telephone interview from Beverly Hills.

"And Jon became humiliated and felt as though he had to leave in order to show the world that he was a man and his celebrity status now gave him the self-esteem to think that he could get other women. So neither of those things would have happened had they not been on television."
