I have nothing to back it up with, but it is my sense that at some point probably sooner than later places like Blockbuster and Rogers Video will simply cease to exist. It is becoming too convenient and trendy to rent or obtain movies online (I think you can access a decent movie database on iTunes, and there are places like zip.ca - not sure the latter is available in Calgary?); coupled with proliferating cable/satellite on-demand services and movie channels it seems like the video rental outlet businesses are struggling to stay viable and relevant. This likely accounts for the weird late fees clusterfata - Blockbuster and Rogers are trying desperately to offer the same kind of convenience and flexibility as the other alternatives, which is an exercise in impossibility.
If I want to see a movie I have plenty of resources literally at my fingertips now; I haven't been able to come up with a reason to go to the video store in literally years now - which probably explains why it has been years since I have actually been to one.
