Yeah, that's definitely the biggest problem. I actually think that domestics actually have some fairly decent exterior styling concepts, but are always ruined by cheap materials and clunky interiors. There is too much focus on gimmicks and features, and not enough focus on materials, construction quality, and ergonomics.
If only they could do what a company like Volkswagen does, building a relatively affordable car that feels more expensive than it is, they could really make a turn around. The materials used in a Golf feel solid, clean, and considered....the materials in any domestic feel like they came out of a some random plastic parts tray that is also used to make baby strollers, trash cans etc.
