It's a Happy Days thing.

The character "Fonzie" was always about how it was "cool to be the nice guy." He had a motorcycle accident in his past, and it changed him into someone who didn't like to show off etc etc. He made it cool to be "uncool" as it were.

...and then, the ratings started slipping and all of a sudden, they throw everything out the window and make Fonzie jump over a shark on water skis. My understanding is that they flip-flopped on his character and tried to make him into the opposite of who he always was (in an effort to get more ratings).

Which is why I scratch my head at how some people use the expression.


(as it relates to House and the afore-mentioned poll... the article says that the majority of the people who voted for House, did so because they are tired of Olivia Wilde's character (13) and think the show would be better without her... not exactly the typical definition of "jumped the shark")
