I grew up in Wallasey which is over the water (the River Mersey) from Liverpool so the first team my parent's allowed me to watch were Tranmere Rovers who hail from Birkenhead. Liverpool was just too scary for them!

Tranmere were in the old Division 4 at the time, the real doormat of the league. They were consistently in the bottom half and almost went into non league one year. Thing is, it was great supporting a team like that. Every win was a huge accomplishment. You really felt a part of it. I have three favourite memories following this team. In 1987 they HAD to beat Exeter City to stay in the pros. It was a really tense match but the Rovers prevailed 1-0 and the scenes of pure joy afterwards were incredible. Grown men crying and hugging each other.

The next one was when the Rovers were playing Crewe and both teams had the chance of promotion. Lo and behold the teams drew 1-1 and both went up. After the match both sets of fans ran onto the field shaking each others hands and hugging. Genuine sportsmanship. That really was what it is all about.

Lastly, an incredible match in the FA Cup against Southampton of the Premier League.
I won't write about it. Watch the video to see why I love this team. Liverpool will always be my No.1 team but Tranmere are a real close second.
