He is not in untouchable QB category in the NFL. There are 5 or 6 maybe that are. The rest are employees to earn money to play football. And if he isnt then you dont pay him Manning/Brady dollars which is what he would have wanted (his agent is after all the same as fancy pants Brett Favre) so we know how he and his clients act durring contract time.
What happened to change them from pass first to run first is simply that they cut ties with Cutler and decided that Orton was good enough at what they needed him to be. If you have pieces around you, you dont have to be Manning or Brady. A guy like Big Ben who I like but dont consider to be great is a prime example. Keep the turnovers low. I am not saying the pieces are in place for next year, far from it but that looks to be their strategy.
In my mind they are getting back to what was there Superbowl formula. Elway was on the downside of his career so they turned into a run first team with solid but not great defense. Their run game controlled everything and allowed their D to get rest.
I am hoping for a 6-10 season this year, anything else IMO will be gravy. 2010-2011 season will show if this strategy will work. |
Even if you have a good QB a good running game is key. From everything I've read about my Cowboys this offseason they intend to put the ball in Jones and MB's hands more often. Just makes sense to control the ball, take the heat off your QB and give your offensive line the ability to dish out some punishment to the d-line. Even ditching Owens methinks has partly to do with is besides the other issues always involved with him. He demands the ball and wants it deep downfield. They still have a speed guy but now they can concentrate more on a ball possession game. Keep the defense off the field more. I'm hoping that is the plan as I'd like to see them run the ball a whole lot more often.
