Except that there was native life on that planet, we saw the Tauntauns, and while they smelled worse on the inside, they were probably chock full of the nutritional value required by a growing ice monster

Out of all of the movie franchises, Trek abuses the whole concept of Deux ex Machina more then anyone else. They flog that puppy like a 12 year old watching a porn movie.
The whole reboot of the franchise was probably written in crayon on a napkin as the easiest way to make everything about the original vanish.
