Out of all of the movie franchises, Trek abuses the whole concept of Deux ex Machina more then anyone else. They flog that puppy like a 12 year old watching a porn movie.

The whole reboot of the franchise was probably written in crayon on a napkin as the easiest way to make everything about the original vanish.
