Could be the CPU overheating too...I had a machine at a client site not too long ago that would work fine until there was enough CPU load from the boot process to cause it to overheat and either emergency power off or hang. Linux, Windows, etc, are all going to be decompressing files and whatnot during install, creating CPU load that might be just enough to overheat it.
Check and see if the heatsink is tight and any cooling fans are spinning properly.
