Pretty similar. I think most people who like one type would like the other although obviously people end up harping on individual differences. I used to own two A4 1.8T's. My friends have owned a Jetta 1.8T, one friend has a 328i and another a 330i. So I've had a bit of experience driving in a few different types.

Differences I've heard or seen:
-Smoother power band on the BWM's vs the Turbo Audi's. Whether you like that or not depends a lot on what you've driven in the past probably. I liked my 1.8T engine. It accelerated at a certain rate and then when you hit higher revs the Turbo kicks in and it really goes. Can change your shifting patterns. Some people hate how the Turbo kicks in and gives you that extra juice. Personal preference
- Most Audi's come standard with Quattro all wheel drive, most BMW's aren't all wheel drive. Actually does have some bearing up in Canada as all wheel drive can really help your traction on icy streets. As long as one wheel has traction you should be able to hit the gas pedal and go in an Audi.
- Interior differences. Personally I love the Audi interior. I hate the BMW having the window controls in the centre console for example. But I'd probably get used to either pretty quick, wouldn't be a deciding factor for me.
- Perception differences. As has been mentioned in this thread, people may hate on you more or generalize about you more if you're a BMW driver. There seems to be a different perception about the two and BWM drivers do get classified as ######s by people. My friend who bought a BMW has noticed this.
- Styling. Personally I think the current Audi models look awesome, I'm not as keen on the new BMW models. If you're buying used I guess it depends which generation you go with, I really liked the BWM style a generation or two ago and have usually liked the Audi styling.

Personally I view the two companies as very similar and basically equivalent. Go test drive a few BMW's and a few Audi's and you'll probably have your own ideas on the matter. I don't think you'd go wrong with either, great engineering on both counts.
