Actually they showed a segment on what happens to our recycled electronics a while back on Global. In your average Pentium II computer there's about $100 worth of precious metals; mostly gold and copper.
As for needing to recycle more than 5 things at a time- I'm quite the packrat when it comes to hanging onto technology longer than I should- and there's only been a handful of times where I had more than 5 things; enough that it would still be easier to make a couple of trips to Staples as opposed to arranging for pickup.
