You can get away with that if you can prove you didn't quit voluntarily. That would cover things like verbal abuse at work your company refused to do anything about (so they can't make you so miserable you quit), allergens introduced into the workplace after you started, etc.

No idea if that covers your "friend", but there are ways you can quit and qualify for EI, but as far as I know those are all investigated.
