If you look around, you can find great prices on used stuff (I got a used $2500 carbon road bike for $800). It also helps to know lots of people who bike. Lots of forums out there (pinkbike, etc).

I'm this close to calling my brother in Winnipeg who is a big bike freak to find me a bike there and I'll bring it back with me when I'm there in three weeks. Only kicker is having to haul it home on the plane.
