This is an ancient thread but with the number of comic book movies recently and Yeah Baby's post about stupid Spiderman and stupid resetting the timeline I thought I'd give it a bump.
Just curious if anyone still reads X-men, or has since "the Twelve" storyline from quite a few years ago. I had a fairly impressive run of X-men, Wolverine and Spawn but then I just quit buying comics one day. Stops at about X-men 100, UXM 380, Wolverine 155 and Spawn 99.
I've since gotten into the habbit of picking up a graphic novel/TPB about once a month. I was actually just at the North Phoenix Comics a week ago or so and dropped $70.
I'm really interested in reading X-men/Wolverine titles since 2000 or so when I stopped collecting but don't really know where to start. Generally I just wander around for a long time then pick something at random that looks good. Sometimes it works (I loved House of M and Astonishing X-men: Gifted) and sometimes it fails (X-men: Eve of Destruction sucked IMO).
Some stuff I love:
Anything Loeb and Sale - Haunted Knight, Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Catwoman: When in Rome, Superman for all seasons, Wolverine/Gambit, Spiderman: Blue, Daredevil: Yellow, Hulk: Grey
The 2 volumes of the Batman: Hush storyline with Loeb and Jim Lee.
Wolverine: Not Dead Yet, Wolverine Origins: Born in Blood
Avengers Forever
Anything by Ennis and Dillon (or either one of them) - Preacher (the entire 9 volume collection), Punisher: Welcome Back Frank, Punisher Max: In the Beginning (just Ennis)
Batman: The Killing Joke
Superman/Batman Vol 1 & 2 Jeph Loeb again. Vol 2 is worth it just for Michael Turner's art.
Batman: Year One by Frank Miller et al: Best Batman ever IMO.
300
Just finished Justice vol 1 of 4 which is fantastic because it features full art by Alex Ross which is always phenomenal (even if he is just painting over Braithwaites pencils). Is Earth X, Universe X and whatever the next one was any good?
Of course Marvels, Kingdome Come, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Dark Knight Returns and the aforementioned Batman: Year One are all awesome. And I may very well continue with the Wolverine Origins and the House of M stories.
Just wondering what anyone else likes? Any good X-men TPBs you want to suggest from the last 9 or so years?
Like I said the work by Whedon and Cassaday on Gifted was excellent. I've also heard Grant Morrisons run was pretty good but haven't read any of it.
What about the New Avengers by Bendis? Or the run on one of the Superman titles by Bendis and Quitely? What about Bendis' run on Daredevil? I've read Guardian Devil and liked it (the run by Kevin Smith) but don't know where to go next.
Anyone read Civil War?
I'd also like some good and fairly recent (ie later than mid 90s) TPBs for Iron Man, FF, Silver Surfer and the Hulk. Of all those I have only 1 title and that is Hulk Grey. For some reason I never got into lots of Marvels core heroes and just stuck to X-men and Wolverine.
Knowing a few solid storylines or even just good issues would be nice because I can find TPBs that way.
And as I'm sure you can tell I'm not a huge DC fan except for Batman and Superman and even then...
As you can see I tend to switch it up a lot and don't follow a lot of titles real close. I usually just buy volume 1 of the Trade and then if it is really good I'll buy more. That was one thing I liked about Loeb and Sale stories and Preacher is that they are mostly self contained and can be read and re-read without needing to read 1000 back issues and crossovers to understand the storylines, continuity etc.
