Unlocking is more effective if you want to get a phone from another part of the world that is unavailable here and use it here. E.g, If you wanted the latest, coolest phone from Japan which won't be available in Canada for 3 years.

Traveling overseas and such it's nice to have an unlocked iPhone so you can slap a local SIM card into the phone and you're good to go.
You couldn't unlock the latest snazzy phone from Japan. They are a pure CDMA country, no GSM, and only GSM phones are "world" phones.
