Unlocking is more effective if you want to get a phone from another part of the world that is unavailable here and use it here. E.g, If you wanted the latest, coolest phone from Japan which won't be available in Canada for 3 years.

I've been told that I can get a card (is that the right term?) in the States and put it into my iPhone to be able to use it in the States without the huge charges. True?
