I haven't tried it in a while (because I don't like the smell of computers smoking) but Dell's P/S's are extremely propritary. (sp?) It's pretty much the only part that cannot be swapped out for another brand.

Dell PSU have not been proprietary for quite sometime(my brothers old Dimension 4600 for example has a standard PSU).
But getting back to the OP, Dell rates their PSU at the sustaned wattage, while PSU producer generally use peak wattage. So while that 475 watt would likely be comparable to 550 watt power supply.
