The best days were when Spock was trying to study everything and Kirk just wanted to kill everything. I kinda just turned into a passing fan. To me the new version goes back to its roots as a more character driven story with some real cool battles. As a huge fan of TOS, the first 6 films and the earlier TNG stuff, I say the movie was phenomenal. The only Trek that compares is Wrath of Khan. If that film had the benefit of the CGI, modern day effects and younger actors this film has it would be a tough call which is better since they are very similar in their plotlines.

The statement they erased Roddenberry's version is in a very one dimensional way to look at it. Any Trek fan knows one of the staples of the series is alternate dimensions, parallel universes, time travel and space time rifts. All this movie has done is followed along and immersed us in one of the parallel universes. The entire timeline changed the second the Kelvin encountered the Romulan ship at the beginning. The original timeline still happened, as old Spock remembers, but now we get immersed in one of the alternate time lines/parallel universes and follow it instead of going back to the original. I have always thought it would be cool to get to see how things panned out in one of the many episodes when the Enterprise crew ecountered alternate versions of them selves or their own realities if we were to stay with the alternate versions. This re-boot gives us that chance.

Personally I think it was a very clever way for them to free themselves of the old canon and take the series in a new direction. I for one will be seeing it again, and the new characters in my opinion were amazing. I laughed every time we got the bones "eyebrow raise" it was perfect.
Thank you for saying a lot of the things I was having trouble articulating.
