The boxes are an eyesore, but I don't think they will contribute much to break ins.
One unintended consequence that the city DID NOT think of, in my opinion, was the issue of bums, hobos, and transients. I've seen several of these filthy beggars canvasing the neighborhood near downtown, looking inside each of these for empty bottles, their creaky old shopping cart in tow..
It won't be long before some drifter walks by and scares granny out doing her gardening. Then we'll get complaints about too many vagrants trespassing on private property and scaring up the neighbors good.
