That reaction I don't entirely understand. I LOVE Star Trek in most of its iterations but ever since ST: DS9 (which is actually my favourite series), I think the franchise has been losing steam and becoming more and more irrelevant to the point where it has (until today!) been off the big and small screen for 4 years.
The franchise needed a reboot. It had to have new people come in with new ideas and new ways of doing things. People who had the ability to market it properly and excite the public about a franchise that has been struggling for the better part of a decade.
This movie (which is getting a phenomenal early response) has the potential to breathe a tremendous amount of new life into Star Trek. Already there is a sequel planned and that may well turn into a trilogy and then probably we will see a new series down the road.
This was the only way to do things and I am very pleased that Star Trek, which I have loved my entire life, has been brought back and brought back for a long time.
