The ban doesn't actually single out Canada as the thread title suggests: the ban is on all seal imports. There's still some hypocracy given how many animals die in European fur farms every year (in the order of millions). Is it more humane to 'farm' animals rather than hunt them? If we set up seal farms rather than hunting them in the wild, does this somehow make it better? Or are seals somehow sacred when compared with foxes and mink?
I think it was inevitable that the seal hunting industry would eventually die, and fur farming will eventually follow the same fate, but for the EU to claim any moral high ground here is ridiculous.
