I inherited a piano from my parents, and I have thousands of dollars worth of big screen television (and some half-decent furniture). Personally, it's worth it to me to pay a few bucks and have a guarantee that my stuff is not going to get wrecked or if it does, that I'm getting the $$ for it. Not like I can really ask my friends for a couple grand to buy me a new piano if they happen to drop it on the way out the door while helping us move.
To keep the costs down, we did move the boxes ourselves because they are easy to pack into the trucks/vans of friends.
