I've found that protecting your updates can really alienates potential followers, which is totally cool and I can see the value in it. I'd suggest just blocking the spam/porn followers from seeing your posts. If you go to the followers section and look at the people following you there's a block option, click that and they won't receive anything you post.

That being said, the big wigs behind twitter do a fairly stand up job of removing spam accounts. You'll notice everyone once and a while your followers total will just drop. Typically that's Twitter clearing out the spam/complaint accounts ... even though the concept of a spam account is quite possibly one of the most pointless things in twitter. The best thin g is that, just because someone is following you it does not mean that you have to follow them back. They've got to earn that right.
