click on the hooks on the objects (like the bowling ball) and drag it to one of the little hanger circles. If the two sides are close to being balanced, the scale at the top will flash green, and another object will fall down. Keep moving them around to maintain balance. Some of the objects like the water bucket have different responses when you move the mouse over them.
