I find if it is s story abut an animal I tend to think of the animal in terms of my own pets I have had, and can't imagine anyone being so cruel.
If it is a person, then unless I know them (or know of them via some sort of back story) I find it is just a story about a stranger. I know that the person is a victim too, but I guess I expect people to be able to stand up for themselves while a pet can't.
