I think that ever since they set a finish date, the show has gotten a lot tighter. Season 2 was mostly filler but near the end of season 3 when they decided on how many episodes would be left the show really started picking up steam.

I found the same thing. It's a show that needs to have a start and finish to be able to fit everything in (or leave stuff out).
Now it seems like there are a number of great episodes with a filler one here and there to bridge the stories together or be a necessary evil to get from point a to point b
