I think it's a pretty cool geography lesson to figure out which direction is the shortest towards Mecca. It really drives home the point that this:
Is a lousy way to picture the world.
Going from a Mercator projection, Muslims in Calgary, would expect to direct their prayers south-east, but the actual direction is NORTH-east, as shown here:
