Of course you're right and you can never generalise, however it is likely you pronounce it that way if you have Canadian parents, were raised in Canada, attended Canadian schools etc. If you sound different to most other Calgarians then it is possible you don't pronounce 'about' in a way that sounds slightly unfamiliar to an American ear.
Also, I think your analogy is a bit wrong. You would be better off to say "That's like us assuming all
Texans speak with a Texas accent". You're right, not all of them do. But most of them do. 'Aboot' is not a regional thing in Canada, although it may be more pronounced in the maritime provinces. I used to think that Albertans don't say 'aboot'. But talk to enough foreigners and you're bound to hear otherwise.
