I think you are off on the ipod though. It is just during takeoff and landing, not necessarily when the seatbelt is lit. It is a safety thing so if there is an emergency you can hear the instructions and not be rocking out with your earphones in.

Nope ...not on air canada at least. I had a talk with the flight attendant about it. All electronic devices are to be turned off while the seatbelt sign is lit and can only be used when it is not, while anything that sends or receives a signal cannot be used at anytime. They don't even give you the opportunity to play dumb as they mention it 3 or 4 times! During my flight the light never came off. I asked halfway through if I could use my ipod and I was told that I couldn't do it.
