I was riding my bike home from UBC today, along W 10th Ave somewhere just west of Granville Street. I entered a traffic circle, going straight through. A guy in a Honda, going perpendicular to me, approached from my right as I entered the intersection. I saw him, he saw me. It seemed he began to slow down and give me right-of-way. I was wrong. Neglecting the rules of traffic circles, he did not yield, and literally took the bike out from under me as he sped through.
Had I not seen him coming, the jackass would still be scraping bits of me off his windshield.
If not for my until-now-undiscovered catlike reflexes, I would have been seriously hurt. His car collided with my bike seemingly milliseconds after I jumped off. The bike struck the side of the car, and I somehow avoided landing on his trunk. I have not a scratch on me
(good omen for tonight, IMO). His car is now well-equipped with a nice dent on the driver's side door.
I threw my arms up in disbelief, he inched forward, drove 50 feet, stopped briefly, and raced away.
Amazingly my bike sustained minimal damage and I was able to ride it home safely. This incident is consistent with my observations on Vancouver drivers and their knowledge of the rules / straight up idiocy.
But the real point of this post is to thank the guy in the Flames t-shirt (and the Asian lady, though I somehow doubt she's a CPer) who came immediately to my aid, making sure I hadn't been injured. Being a savvy Flames fan in Vancouver, you were also able to remember the ######'s license plate and give me that info as well. You are the man!
I'm slightly embarrassed to say I wasn't wearing a helmet at the time, so I won't be filing a complaint against said ######.
