I don't know that that constitutes cheating. You're not asking the referee to lie for you. You're asking them to tailor their reference to what the prospective employer might be looking for... it doesn't mean the referee has to comply or be dishonest.
Further, if you're asking for a reference letter, I think it's incumbent upon you to provide the referee with as much information about the new job as possible, including what things they might be looking for. This can be especially helpful if your referee doesn't know that field or employer. What the referee chooses to do with your "directions" is up to them.
