Also, Russia has actually fared much better than expected in the current economic climate. This raises some implications as the new Eastern countries that have or trying to the join the EU are struggling (ie Poland and Ukraine) and the EU is refusing to help them with their debts. The real senario is that Russia can offer these countries an opportunity to take on their debt, if they give up their EU ambitions and see things from the Russian perspective.

Finally, my Economist subscription pays off... Actually, Russia is not doing that well, being a resource exporter - it has been pissing away its huge foreign currency reserves to prop up the ruble.
Obama is clearly hoping to buy Russian cooperation on Iran and Afghanistan by sacrificing the missiles in E.Europe.
