Now I'm in the less, but better, clothes camp. I spend about the same amount of money (ie, not much), but I feel like i have better things that last longer and don't wear out as fast.

Exact same with me. I almost always wear jeans so I am going to spend more money on them.
What are the other options? Khakis? Slacks? and I'm not really a shorts type of guy.
Anyways, I've spent over 200 on a single pair jeans. I don't buy many pairs, but I am willing to spend on the ones I do. I also got into dry denim a while ago.
I started out with diesels, then moved onto Nudies, my last pair of jeans was a French brand APC.
My favorite pair was probably my Levis 1947 reproduction model in dry selvage denim. Well worth the price.
I'm kind of a snob with my jeans. The only one of the big mainstream brands (diesel, sevens, true religions, etc) that I will buy is Diesels. Beyond that it's got to be something of slightly higher quality. I'm not willing to spend 250 bucks on a pair of gaudy true religions just so everyone can know i am wearing true religions.
