I think I'd give the nod to the truck balls being worse. Straight up I'd say fart cans are worse than truck balls for sure, but the odds of the truck balls being on a raised diesel pickup with a massive side exit exhaust that will fill my open drivers window with soot when it's driver floors it off the line at every light are much higher.
Plus said raised diesel truck has potentially to actually be pretty quick, and when it's careless driver is involved with a head on with me It will probably shear the roof of my car off as well as my torso.
The fart can is annoying, but odds are the guy is slow, small and lowered, so he'll just bounce right off and you'll be okay.
I actually have an exhaust on my current car. I chose it specifically because it sounds the exact same as stock under normal driving conditions, and you only hear it when the throttle is opened up. I bought it both for performance reasons and because it does sound pretty good when you open it up. I have a Euro V8 (DOHC, not pushrod like American V8's) so I wanted to keep the quiet, refined sound and it doesn't sound like a muscle car at all. People that don't know cars would never even know I had it, and that's the way I like it.
